Los Angeles, CA (October 8, 2015) – Travel With Purpose, a 501(C)(3) that focuses on empowering women and girls by generating projects that offer sustainable solutions to financially and emotionally support beneficiaries, announces its next mission in Fond des Blancs, Haiti alongside Haiti Projects for their Artisan Cooperative.
The Artisan Cooperative, founded in 1994, employs nearly 100 women at Fair Trade wages making heirloom quality, handcrafted embroidered and knit products. Their products are sold online, at retailers and through events in the U.S. and in Haiti. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these items go directly toward supporting the Haiti Projects artisans, providing them with a life changing income.
Travel With Purpose will be expanding the Artisan Cooperative with the goal of employing an additional 100 women by 2017. By employing these women in rural Haiti, where land is barren and the unemployment rate is a staggering 75%, we will also be providing a future for nearly 400 children. In addition, Travel With Purpose will also become a distributor in the U.S. and sell the products the artisans make in order to continue to provide an additional avenue of income for the project.
Cherie Abbanat, current CEO of Haiti Projects and lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), elaborates, “Our partnership with Travel With Purpose is key to expanding operations and opportunity in Fond des Blancs, where literacy rates, unemployment rates, and birthrates are high. Women struggle to balance family responsibilities, send kids to school and pay for basic medical expenses. Travel with Purpose’s pledge to Haiti Projects is not only much needed, but it is a rare opportunity to partner with such a dynamic impactful organization.”
“It took me months to find the right NGO in Haiti that was in line with Travel With Purpose’s mission. After my first conversation with Cherie I knew right away this was a project I wanted to be a part of…and three weeks later I hopped on a plane to Haiti to see the Artisan Cooperative and meet the women and the team. The work Haiti Projects is doing in Fond des Blancs is not only beautiful, but extremely necessary. It will be a dream and an honor for Travel With Purpose to bring this project into fruition,” affirms Loren Medina, founder of Travel With Purpose.
Travel With Purpose will set out to raise $70k by the beginning of January 2016 for the expansion project. In mid-January we will be organizing a mission to Fond des Blancs where donors and volunteers can come, see the project and the expansion come to life.
